They mean the same thing as far as I know. An air cleaner is another word for an air purifier. Different cleaners/purifiers work differently and that’s where the differences lie. We had to buy one for our daughter a few months ago because our neighbor smokes so much we could smell it on our apartment. It was a bit expensive but worth every penny.
