How can I get the smell of smoke out of my apartment, do air purifiers work?

How do I get the smoke from downstairs to stop stinking up my apartment?

The people who live in the apartment below me smoke, and the smell comes up into my apartment. Not only does everything I own reek of an ashtray, but I am also finding that it is irritating my throat to the point that I can not even talk without it hurting.

I’ve heard of setting out bowls of charcoal. Would air purifiers work? Do they filter out smoke? It’s just such a heavy smell that it seems like nothing will work. My pesky neighbors are going to cost me a couple hundred bucks for an air purifier, and for medicine to control my throat flare ups.

I’ve tried opening the windows, but guess what? When the weather is nice enough for that, they have their windows open too, so the smoke comes right on up to my windows!

When I move out of here, I am going to a 100% smoke-free apartment complex!

So what do you think??? Has anyone ever had this problem? Anyone have any great tips for getting continual smoke smells out??

I worked as a Maint. Supervisor for many years for many Apt. Complexes and fully understand your situation. Oh and by the way there is no such thing as a 100% smoke free complex. You can however ask for a transfer to a unit near the model or show units that are usually uninhabited or you best bet is to get a ionizer, also use a higher quality air filter in your A/C and allow your fan to remain on continuosly “not your a/c”. Its only a 110volt fan so its not that demanding on your electric bill. this will circulate your home well alos leave a small crak in one window when able and in an opposit room do the same this will create a current of air and impaction flow with your fan on. Also you may pull back the edges of your carpet which is very simple and make sure the cracks are sealed with caulk and spray down a inozing formula that kills germs and or deodorizes. But what gets me is while your so content with ridding the smoke most dont know the gasses from your P-trap under your sink or toilet that are undetectable are much more harmful than diluted second hand smoke. So if its just the smell then I suggest the remedies above.

The real use for an air purifier is to remove harmful particles from the air. Mold, mildew, pollen, dust…

Yes, they will remove a bit if the smell from smoke and pet odor, but I am not sure it would be enough to help that problem in itself.

They are still a great addition to your home if you do not have one! I would strongly suggest you add it as it can’t possibly hurt and could help your lungs.

Try Febreeze, and look for where it is leaking so you can patch it up.

The ideal solution would be to talk with the neighbor and ask them if they could open a window in their apartment when they smoke, or smoke outdoors. However, this may not leave a good first impression with them. Electronic (electrostatic) types of air cleaners seem to work well and don’t require expensive hepa and charcoal replacement cartridges. This in combination with a odor absobing spray (Fabreeze) and periodically airing out the apartment should work.

clean the walls with vinegar use baking soda on the rugs and vacuum it up. Fabreeze does work pretty good at killing the smoke smell. Good luck
