HEPA and a carbon filter would be my choice. Most of the Ionic Breeze type devices emit ozone, which is a major lung irritant and can cause asthma-like symptoms in just about any one. Not to mention that ozone is very tough on furnishings.
the absolute best purifier is the atmosphere purifier. It’s been shown in the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition TV show. It removes up to 99.99% of the airborne particles. Has a HEPA filter, 5 speeds of air flow, timer. The Ionic breeze only removes 43%. It has no remote control.
A few people I know have the Ionic Breeze and love it. I’m not sure about the other one, but if I were you I’d probably get the Ionic Breeze. Tell your spouse that beggars can’t be choosers, haha.

The upshot was, Karen ditched the "purifier" she’d borrowed from a friend, and her asthma symptoms were gone in a few days…
