Neighbors cigarette smoke is making us sick – what would you do?

We just moved to a new house about 3 weeks ago. At the same time, another new family moved in next door. They are chain smokers, and they spend the whole day sitting in their yard at a spot next to our kitchen windows. Our whole house fills up with smoke, it smells like a bar. We have put caulking on all the windows on that side of the house, weatherstripping, sealed the windows with that plastic stuff, and run 2 air purifiers yet still our house reeks from their smoke. My daughter and I have asthma, and we’re home all day (I’m a stay at home mom and she’s 4) and we have to spend our days running for our breathing medications. This is no way to live, I think we should be able to live comfortably in our home without having our lives invaded by someone else’s bad habit. What would you do?

Cat allergies and Air Filters?

So my girlfriend has two cats that are driving my allergies nuts. I’ve seen the ads for air purifiers that are suppost to help this kind of thing, but I’m kind of sceptical about shelling out 0 for an air filter without a fan.

So anyway, has anyone with pet allergies tried one of these new fangled HEPA/Ionized Air filters, do they work well on cat allergies? and is there a type or brand that you’d recommend?

Any other tips on treating cat allergies?

How effect are air purifiers?

My one year old little girl has had a lot of problems breathing. She has been in the hospital at least twice because she has difficulty breathing. The doctors told us that she has bronchalitis. They will not diagnose her with asthma yet because she is too young. I have recently finished an environmental science class and with that new insight I believe that an air purifier will help her with breathing, at least when she sleeps. My wife is a little more skeptic on the issues. She doesn’t believe that an air purifier will necessarily help our daughter. She is worried that the air purifier will put out more pollutants in to the air then it takes out. I have been looking into air purifiers with a three filter combination (pre-filter, carbon filter, and hepa filter) to maximize the purification. We will not be getting an ozone purifier or an ion purifier do to the chance that extra ozone will be put into the air from the purifier. Thank you for any help you can give.

Anyone have suggestions on the best air purifier for a smoke filled home?

I’m 28 an have been living in this house for most of my life. I moved out to live with boyfriends and what not, but for the most part have lived here. My uncle (who chain smokes) and my grandfather (who smokes cigars) has lived here the whole time I’ve been here, and before my mom and grandmother passed away they also smoked and lived here. Needless to say I’ve always got my fair share of 2nd hand smoke. I’m starting to get a cough now that I never had before, and I am wondering what is a good air filter for smoke? I have TWO air purifiers in my room that I have to constantly clean, of course one is old and the other is the ionic pro but with the smoke in this house it gets dirty SO fast I have to clean it every week.
I even have a filter type material double layered over my air vent but mostly that just keeps out dust, doesn’t work too well on smoke ;(
Some of you might say "well your 28, just move out" yea I wish I could..but I cant I because I’m taking care of my 81 year old grandfather who has cancer (he says cigars are his only "vice" and let me tell you, he smokes ALL day)
PLEASE I need advice on a good air purifier that’s affordable like 0 or under that is good for smoke & not just dust & allergens..any advice will be appreciated. I’m tired of not being able to breathe ;(

Can changing air purifer filters to better replacements = higher CADR?

I have a couple of air purifiers. I have read many reviews on how they work. My question is what exactly makes one model have a greater CADR than another? Could you possibly put a better filter in one & get better results? I’m sure its not that easy or someone would of thought of it by now. It just seem like all they do is suck in air (through filters) then blow it back out.

Air Ionic Purifier

Why is "high" the first setting after "off" on air purifiers?

For example, on all the different kinds of air purifiers I have it always goes something like this on the speed dial:

Off – High – Medium – Low

Do you recognize the weirdness of this? Is there a sort of technical reason to do this, or is it a peculiar user convenience factor, or are they just toying with our mind’s to see if anyone notices it?

I think it would make more sense if they were something like this…
Off-Low-Medium-High
… then it is at least in a logical ascending order.

Does anyone know sites where I could get stable proof that Perna Viridis Shells could be air purifiers?

I’ve asked already if they could be air purifiers. This time I made it a bit more specific. I need stable, easy to understand proof (I’m in 2nd year highschool). And it’s for our investigatory project. Maybe you could also help me why they link Cd,Cu,Pb and Zn to Perna Viridis shells. :) Thanks sooo much to those who would help!

Are air purifiers as strong as a fan?

Right now I’m thinking of buying the 0 or so HEPA type air purifiers. I would like to get an air purifier for my apartment, but want to know if they can double as a fan. Do they usually blow like a fan as well, or do they just purify the air without the breeze? If not, are there some you can think of that blow as well as purify? Which ones can you guys recommend?

Are air purifiers healthy for rats?

I am going to get rats and I was wondering if air purifiers would mess with them in any way. I know this question may seem stupid, but I think it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks!

Environmental and Food Allergies. Tips? Recipes?

We found out about my environmental/seasonal allergies about a year or two ago and just this month discovered that I also have food allergies. I can’t eat wheat, gluten, egg whites, red, or green peppers.

Since these are in a lot of foods my parents and I have been having trouble finding things for me to eat. We visit the health food store weekly after the allergist in hopes to find something palatable for the whole family. (It’s just too expensive to buy separate pastas, breads and such) So far we haven’t had much luck and only finding some pastas that are good. My mom just recently got a bread maker so I was in search of some recipes and was hoping that maybe someone may have some good websites or advice for us.

It’s really important that we can get the allergies under control since I’m only 13 and it’s causing me to be out of school constantly. As I stated before, I’m on weekly allergy shots, we’ve got air purifiers in all parts of the house, the bed and pillow covers, and a "safe room" I go to if I ever have problems; but we’re stumped because I just can’t seem to feel better. I get a croup-like cough and/or itchy and watery eyes when I have a reaction and it can only stop with Benadryl.

Hopefully you all can help, thanks for your time!
Ah also forgot to mention, we’ve been to an ear, nose, and throat specialist as well as a pulmonologist that have given me temporary relief with acid reflux pills and such (saying it would irritate the throat and cause the cough).

Do those Ionic Air Purifiers really work?

I have a dog and a cat. NO allergies, just want to cleanse the air in my house.

I’m really interested in hearing about the air purifiers with the IONIC technology that emits negative (positive? i don’t know) ions into the air.

Anyway, which air purifiers, if any, work well and cost little to operate (i.e. replacement filters, etc.)

((Personal experiences plz))

Anyone out there have experience with pets who've gotten the big "C" from second hand smoke?

my kitten is 11 months old, he is so sweet.
one of my roommates smokes and I’ve told them I wish they wouldn’t do it around my kitten however last week my worst fears came to life:
my kitten had a hacking episode so I took him to the vet. They did some tests and an examination, in the end they prescribed an antibiotic and said if that doesn’t improve his breathing then they’ll have to do an x-ray. They said they suspect cancer but they want to try this med before they do the x-ray
-I got a second opinion and they agreed
I know the best thing I can do is to put some air purifiers around the house, keep smoke free areas for the cat to hang out in, and groom him more often (so if he gets any residue in his fur, he won’t ingest it during grooming)
I’ve worked with animals my whole life and I’ve faced death and disease many times; I’m even applying to college to become a vet tech..
yet, I’m scared
I love this cat..I just need some emotional support; does anyone else have a similar story?
ty
we’re not sure if he has cancer yet-that’s why he’s on the antibiotics; both vets agreed that we should try the medication before putting him through the stress of an x-ray. According to the first vet the blood tests were "inconclusive" the second vet we saw didn’t take more blood, they just looked over the results from the first test and agreed
I understand that if he has cancer it will be most likely caused by both a genetic disposition and irritation from second hand smoke
it is not hard to believe that he might have a genetic disposition to cancer because he does have food allergies, anxiety issues, and all in all he’s been a rather sickly kitten from day one-I’ve had him since he was 5 weeks old (I know, he was young to be weaned from his mother but there were difficult circumstances)
I’ve done all the medical research needed and I understand whats happening and whats possible vs whats probable
I’m still scared!
Can someone whose been through something similar help me feel better?
and we are moving out soon…I can’t stand the smoke any longer either

How can I go to school without smelling like smoke?

I am 13. My dad smokes. The whole house smells like smoke. You can tell after you take a shower then open the bathroom door. When people walk pass me at school sometimes, they comment on how it smells like smoke. They never use my name. I don’t know if they are unsure of who it is or if they are trying not to use my name. I tried spray deoterant, but the smoke in my clothes makes it smell like rubbing alchol after a few minets. I have a big winter coat and it is like a smoke magnet. I hate wearing it becuase it smells like heavy smoke. We used to have two air purifiers, but my dad throw them away becuase they gave off a metalic smell (it still smelled better than smoke). It’s too cold to open the window. I asked him to quiet and he said he would, but that was a year ago.
