I have asthma and allergies and had an ionic breeze unit that died – I am looking for an air purifier for a medium sized room – cost is not as important as quality and quiet operation – thanks!
Neighbors cigarette smoke is making us sick – what would you do?
We just moved to a new house about 3 weeks ago. At the same time, another new family moved in next door. They are chain smokers, and they spend the whole day sitting in their yard at a spot next to our kitchen windows. Our whole house fills up with smoke, it smells like a bar. We have put caulking on all the windows on that side of the house, weatherstripping, sealed the windows with that plastic stuff, and run 2 air purifiers yet still our house reeks from their smoke. My daughter and I have asthma, and we’re home all day (I’m a stay at home mom and she’s 4) and we have to spend our days running for our breathing medications. This is no way to live, I think we should be able to live comfortably in our home without having our lives invaded by someone else’s bad habit. What would you do?
asthma…air purifier?
i have very bad asthma, but only when it comes to being around any cleaning products, pollen, dust…i also have 4 cats and im sure the cat hair starts it up too….i am looking for an ionic breeze or an air purifier, that’s cost effective and also does not eat up a lot of electric so that i can leave it on at all times…anyone have any suggestions or links for them?
How effect are air purifiers?
My one year old little girl has had a lot of problems breathing. She has been in the hospital at least twice because she has difficulty breathing. The doctors told us that she has bronchalitis. They will not diagnose her with asthma yet because she is too young. I have recently finished an environmental science class and with that new insight I believe that an air purifier will help her with breathing, at least when she sleeps. My wife is a little more skeptic on the issues. She doesn’t believe that an air purifier will necessarily help our daughter. She is worried that the air purifier will put out more pollutants in to the air then it takes out. I have been looking into air purifiers with a three filter combination (pre-filter, carbon filter, and hepa filter) to maximize the purification. We will not be getting an ozone purifier or an ion purifier do to the chance that extra ozone will be put into the air from the purifier. Thank you for any help you can give.

Air Pollution Effects On Our Children
The following is a clip that discusses the findings of the Children’s Health Study. This study, begun in 1992, was conducted by a team of scientists at the University of Southern California. The funding for this project was provided by the California Air Resources Board. Scientists identified a large population of 5500 children from 12 communities. The selected many different regions within Southern California with differing types and levels of air pollution. Over several years, the scientists kept close contact with all these children in each of these regional communities and measured, monitored and compared their respiratory health. The results can be seen in the video. Aprilaire Air Cleaners Help Reduce Indoor Airborne Allergens
In an effort to protect public health and combat airborne invaders, Aprilaire is urging consumers nationwide to consider whole-home air cleaners as part of a modern and integrated approach to managing indoor air quality. Homeowners can be sure that a whole-home air cleaner works to permanently trap the airborne contaminants that most affect health and aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms, moving clean and comfortable air throughout every room of the home, all while operating silently and out of sight.
Indoor Pollution and its Impact for Asthma Sufferers
It’s very well known that increased levels of air pollutants on a given day will increase the occurrence of asthma exacerbations and actually nasal symptoms as well. Often times, there’s a lag of about one or two days after the increased ozone or particulate matter exposure, which are the pollutants most commonly monitored, and the occurrence of disease. We think that that 24-hour lag time is associated with changes in the airway inflammatory system that make a person with asthma more likely to respond to things that they’re allergic to such as house dust mite allergen or cat allergen. Which of these air purifiers are good for me?
I’m in the market for an air purifier and I’m not sure which kind I should get. I’ve taken a look at some, and I’m not sure which would fit my needs. I first took a look at some HEPA filters, since I know they filter 99.99% of air particulates. But I also knew that they’re usually loud, you have to change the 0 filter every other month and they take up a lot of energy. I saw a Kenmore Envirosense filter and though it looked nice, but still; the hassle with expensive filters and energy. Before I go on, I should say the men in my family (My dad, brother and me) all have asthma, so we need something that would help with that. We also took a look at some models over at Brookstone. We found a Pure-Ion Advanced Air Purifier. The thing was ugly, but it worked, saying you would have 80% cleaner air in about 8 minutes. This isn’t a HEPA filter, but it had a fan. They say this one helps with asthma, but I’m not sure. Another one from Brookstone was the Blueair HEPA filter, one that was more
impressive than the Pure-Ion. This one came in a tabletop form, but still, the filters and the whopping price tag of 0.
Anyways, after that, we went to the Oreck store because we heard about some kinda amazing deal on TV, letting us try an Oreck Air purifier, vacuum, and a refrigerator purifier. one of Oreck’s points was "You can’t clean the air if you can’t move it", which made perfect sense to me, but there was one trick up my sleeve that made me think otherwise. Anyways, the Oreck one was impressive, requireing no filters and taking up much less noise and space and eating less eletricity than HEPA filters. However, when compared other filters like this one, it ranked the lowest, but I’ve never tried it, so I really wouldn’t know. After that, came our last stop which would be the trick up my sleeve. We went into The Sharper Image immediately seeing their crown acheivement, the Ionic Breeze Quadra, the purifier I had heard about long before the other filters, so I had somewhat of a bias towards it. Like many other purifiers, these use ions and electrons and stuff like that to clean the air
And it game in multiple models, the Tabletop version, the MIDI, the Quadra, the GP, and the Hybrid GP, which is some huge powerful air purifier. The GP caught my eye because It offered deep cleaning without an over-the-top price tag. These however, don’t use fans. So I had no clue how it was cleaning all the air. An explanation from you guys would be helpful. If you guys have owned or used these fiulters, please tell me and how you liked them. Especially if it help with your asthma.

Austin Air Purifiers on the Today Show – Is your home making you sick?
Your home is supposed to be your sanctuary. A place where you can be safe from all the dangers of the outside world, but if you suffer from chronic fatigue, headaches or have difficulty breathing, you just may be living inside the enemy. In this clip, “Today” show host Matt Lauer talks with Ron and Lisa Beres, founders of greennest.com, who tested the home of David and Kellie Ford from southern California, about keeping our homes healthy. Both the Austin Air HealthMate air purifier and Austin Air Babys Breath air purifier are highlighted as solutions for cleaning household air to prevent sickness. There are some very significant points made by Ron and Lisa about Austin Air purifiers. First, Lisa emphasizes a little know fact that indoor air is actually MORE polluted than the outdoor air! When it is found that the air in David and Kellies home is unhealthy, she recommends the Austin Air HealthMate air purifier which uses a medical-grade HEPA air filter. Ron goes on to explain that HEPA air filters remove 99% of particulates out of the air, and unlike other air filters, HEPA filters will remove gases, chemicals, and odors. Later, Lisa details the importance of cleaning your air with Austin Air purifiers. She mentions that childhood asthma is currently the most chronic disease in children right now, and shockingly, babies are being born with over 200 hundred chemicals already in their blood! Please watch the clip and see for yourself.

Does cleaning carpets work to remove cat dander?
Hi. My husband and I are considering buying a house that we like very much, but it has a problem: the current owners have a cat to whom I am very allergic. It’s really, really bad: even taking allergy medication and using my asthma inhaler ahead of time didn’t really help. Here is what I am wondering: would getting the carpets professionaly steam-cleaned work to address this issue? Or would I more likely need to actually replace the carpeting itself? Also, what about adding a whole-house air purifier to the HVAC system? Is it likely to make much of a difference?
If you could please let me know your thoughts, that would be great. We love this house but not if it will keep making me sick. Thanks!
P.S. There is no cat ODOR per se — you’d never know there was a cat until you saw it. It’s the poor cat’s dander that is making me allergic, not an odor or anything like that.
