How Can We Remove Food Odors in Our Open Plan Home?

We have a brand new open plan house, two stories. When I make a meal, food odors permeate the house, even though I run the range fan on high. Our staircase, which is centered in the house, acts like a ventilator shaft and pulls the odors up to the second floor. When it is warm enough (we are in Ohio) we open the front and back doors and turn on the fans in all the bathrooms. I spray some neutralizing air spray, but my husband hates the smell, and I definitely cannot use anything with fragrance. Even so, most mornings we wake up to the smell of grilled chicken or pot roast or whatever dinner was, which isn’t very appealing at six a.m. And frying bacon on Sunday morning! Good grief! We have a whole house air cleaner attached to our HVAC system, but that doesn’t seem to work, at least not very quickly. We have considered purchasing a whole room air purifier, but they are so ugly and loud. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks much.

Depending on which direction it’s turning, a ceiling fan will direct the air up or down. Keep the air directed downward. (But hot air rises, so you’re working in spite of the house design.)

(I assume you being very careful about replacing the filters in the HVAC system.)
